Internal Quality Assurance Qualifications (Level 4)

There has never been a better time to train as an Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) with so many Apprenticeships on the rise. If you are a qualified Assessor and looking for a new challenge then this could be the ideal next move for you.

We can help. Our level 4 qualifications are perfect for anyone wanting to progress into a career as a qualified internal verifier.

About our programme

The Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices is a nationally recognised qualification. It is an industry requirement set by Awarding Bodies as the benchmark for best practice in quality assurance of assessment practice. This Level 4 qualification has replaced the old D34 and V1 qualifications.

City & Guilds have long been at the forefront of education and training and Fresh Management Solutions is approved to deliver this professional qualification.

There are two units to complete in order to achieve the full Level 4 qualification to become a qualified IQA and able to practice. Please note that the first unit is a knowledge-only unit that can be certificated, however on its own it does not qualify you to practice.

The units are:

  • Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices. This is the knowledge-only award for those who are interested in quality assurance but are not currently practicing. It is also for anyone who would like know more about internal quality assurance but not conducting quality assurance themselves. This can be a stand-alone unit but is insufficient to enable you to practice as an IQA.
  • Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices. This qualification is suited to practitioners who have gained the Level 4 knowledge element and need to conduct internal quality assurance of assessment processes and practice. This will be through sample planning, monitoring, advising and supporting Assessors on their assessment practice. You will be able to verify the work of Assessors through a broad range of subject specialisms, depending on your experience.

Who is this qualification for?

You will need to be carrying out assessments and quality assurance in environments such as Further Education, Adult Learning Centres, training providers and employers. The qualification is transferable across any sector that you have qualifications and/or experience in.

The responsibilities of an IQA are broad and varied. You will plan how and when to support your Assessors through observation of Assessor performance, provide constructive feedback and support, sample assessment records and judgements, conduct interviews with learners, facilitate standardisation activities to ensure best possible practice and maintain links with External Quality Assurers and Awarding Organisations.

Studying for the qualification will enable you to build in-depth knowledge of quality assurance, covering key topics such as those given above, plus principles and practices of quality assurance, the importance of key legal and good practice requirements, as well as health & safety and equality, diversity and inclusion practices, and Assessor and student welfare.

Delivery format

To secure the knowledge element of the qualification, we deliver a three-day workshop to cover all aspects in an enjoyable and rewarding way as part of a small group of learners.

There are lots of practical activities to make the under-pinning knowledge you need to acquire, more tangible and memorable. We will share our breadth of knowledge and experience of quality assurance with you so that you will leave with a sound understanding of the topic. At the end of the delivery, the successful completion of written assignments, a practical assignment and a professional discussion will complete the unit.

If appropriate and desirable, you will then proceed to the competency unit. Completion of this takes the form of a portfolio of evidence for you to demonstrate your competency-based evidence of quality assurance in your own workplace. This includes personal reflections, product evidence, evidence of all aspects of quality assurance from planning through to Assessor feedback, and last but not least, observations of you working with your Assessors.

We allow 9 months for you to complete this qualification but you may complete earlier as evidence and opportunities allow. There are a few practical requirements to highlight:

  • You will need to identify two Assessors to work with in order to develop the skills and the evidence you need for the portfolio. The two Assessors will need to be working with two learners completing portfolio-based competency qualifications, giving assessment judgements on their evidence.
  • You will also need support from an existing IQA in your organisation.
  • The portfolio-building requirements for the competency-based elements will require that our Fresh Management Solutions Assessor has access to you in your workplace to carry out observations of your practice.

We will be pleased to discuss these and any questions you may have about our qualification courses.
